Have you been sticking to them? I have been doing my bookwork so I'm making a resolution now! I will not let this work get ahead of me again!!! I've been working like a dog on the books and would rather be quilting or doing something creative. Wouldn't you?

I have done one little project this year. Here's a picture - can you guess what it is.

Before Christmas we had a wonderful holiday but it put us way behind with our preparations. We did most of our shopping on our trip so that was a big help. There were so many beautiful things to buy and I really don't need anything, so combined Christmas shopping with the tourist thing.

I did a bit of sewing before going away. Here is a picture of a little boot I made. The pattern is called Bootyful by Country Angel Designs. They were very easy to make up and were a hit. They come in two sizes. The large boot will hold a can of nuts and the small one will hold a small preserving jar.

Why, you ask? Well, my DH and I just celebrated our 50th anniversary. We planned a day with family and fiends and had a wonderful time. We had a picture show done that followed us from babies to our older age (yes, not too old yet - was a child bride, ha ha). It included our families and, of course, a lot of the fun and silly times we've had. Everyone enjoyed it and had lots of laughs. We then renewed our vows but were only fortunate enough to have one bridesmaid and our flower girl there. It was great to see so many of the people I grew up with and I was pleased they could make it. All in all it was a wonderful day.

Before that we went to the beautiful Quilt Show - Quilting Around Chatauqua. What a wonderful show and the weather couldn't have been nicer. Lot of laughs, and of course, a few goodies from the vendors.

Thinking that Christmas would come up very fast, I have gotten a few things made ahead of time. How do you like this cute little Advent Calendar? I embellished it with a few snow flake buttons to give it some extra pizzaz.
After we started for home, our computer would not work. We couldn't figure out what the problem was but, we were very wary since having all these strange e-mails. Well, when it went completely black and we couldn't use it at all, found out it was truly dead and could not be revived. Really, it's only a few years old - don't they last longer than that? Guess not. We'd better get a new one and this time I wanted one that was the fastest and had the newest hard drive, etc., etc. Well, that didn't last long either. Back to the store for a new one. This one didn't last long before it was giving trouble too - send it to the manufacturer and get it fixed. Seems I had a software problem. All this time, my DH moved over to let me do the things I absolutely had to do on his computer. It was not easy some days but we came through. Now to get used to 8.1 - I'm still working on that. Sometimes it's just easier to move to the old computer - it may be slow but it's easier to use.

After getting the computer fiasco fixed up, I had the opportunity to go to the Vermont Quilt Festival. Four of us girls went and we had a blast. Quilts were great but the vendors and shops were even greater - at least that's what my wallet said!

It wasn't long before someone was using my credit card again. I hate it when people charge trips to my card and don't invite me! Here we go again, calling and having the card cancelled and having to wait for the new one. Glad they don't take too long to arrive. I don't know how this is happening but twice in 4 months is just about enough.

Things seem to have calmed down now and I'm certainly glad of that.

I didn't get much sewing done over the summer. I started on a few Christmas ideas and have to show you the quilt I put together on a retreat in the Spring. It has been really popular and I hope you like it.
It's a wonderful, cozy flannel and kits for this quilt will be available very shortly. I've run out of one of the fabrics and am waiting for it to arrive. Shouldn't be long now.

This is getting tiring! Just a few days before leaving for our vacation, our credit card company cancelled my husbands' card - they think it had been compromised. Send a new card fast!!! And, so they did. Away we go.

We check our e-mails regularly while away to keep in contact with friends and family.
Well, here's an e-mail from our Bank???? They've never e-mailed us before. Actually, I don't think they ever e-mail their customers. NO, we won't just "click here" to confirm anything. We made a call to them and they agreed - don't click!

A couple of days later, an e-mail from another Bank - we don't even have an account with them. NO, we won't just "click here". To the Trash you go!

The next was an e-mail from Itunes. Please confirm the order. What order? The order for a couple of hundred dollars. Noting it was being billed to our e-mail address, decided NO - we won't "click here". Trash again!

Today, my DH decided to check our credit card account to ensure everything was okay. What? Not again? Here was a charge for over $1600.00 - not our purchase! This time it was my card.

There are lessons here: don't just "click here" when asked to. The e-mails from the Banks really looked good, even including their insignias, but after thinking about it, realized they don't even have our e-mail address. The e-mail from Itunes wanted us to click if it was not our order. That sounds really good, doesn't it. Don't be too swift with clicking. If you didn't order it, why would they have our address to ask for confirmation?

Keep your eyes on your credit card account. Don't just pay that balance. Keep all receipts and match them to your statement. A lot of times, anyone using your number will make small purchases to start with to see if they get through - don't let anything but your own purchases get through.

Wouldn't you agree, if these people who are always scamming would use their talents in a positive manner, what a world it could be! They could be doing something really good.

I hope by telling this story, I am able to stop someone from making the mistake of giving out information they shouldn't. This has all happened in a space of about five weeks which makes us very wary now. Be vigilant and make sure who you're corresponding with.

Good night for now, and may your bobbins always be full!

Bolts and Bobbinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06189397615354924334noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3878906696349456937.post-26764074783292811522014-02-13T16:41:00.000-08:002014-02-13T16:41:56.013-08:00I know, it's been a long time...I didn't realize just how long it's been since I've posted. A lot has happened since my last post.

The first thing was a trip to Cuba. What a nice vacation. We had a great hotel and the people were lovely. They couldn't do enough for us. We did a tour of Havana in a 1956 Chev Bel Air. With the driver and tour guide, I couldn't figure out how the four of us would also fit in the vehicle. Well, silly me, I forgot how big these old vehicles were. We were quite comfortable. The architecture there is awesome and so much restoration is going on, which is wonderful. Warm weather, good friends, and drinking Banana Mamas on the beach - how good is that???

Christmas came fast after our vacation. Our DD and DGD came for a four day visit in mid December so we had our Christmas a little early. Of course, when it came time for them to go home, the weather didn't co-operate. They ended up staying two more days before they could get out. We celebrated again on Christmas day, this time with in-laws and our new little niece who is as cute as a button. We normally spend Christmas Eve with friends but, I'm afraid, sickness took over and we had to wait until January. Our friends were sick, then my DH and I got it too. Sickness has been the order of the day twice since 2014 began. At times, Rudoph didn't hold a candle to me!

January is that time of year when we resolve to get ourselves organized. Well, I'm no different, except, that I didn't accomplish a whole lot. Just sorted scraps. Instead of having a laundry hamper full, I've sorted them into colours and put them into separate drawers. Much easier to get at when doing a scrap quilt.

I haven't even done any sewing, although I did cut out a tumbler quilt. I've always wanted one so thought I'd get one ready to sew while on vacation. Yes, I set my sewing machine up with the ironing surface beside and sew a seam or two whenever the urge hits. I've gotten a lot done with little effort in years gone by. I also thought it might be a good idea to take a UFO so have 42 Angela's Arrowhead blocks to put together. They're only a year old (relatively new to the UFO pile).

We are currently hunkered down in a hotel - stuck in the Atlanta snowstorm. Wonder what they'd do if I took my sewing machine to the breakfast room, put a couple of tables together, and proceeded to sew my tumbler quilt together? I'm sure there would be heads shaking at that. I'm finding it quite boring just watching TV, although I am enjoying the Olympics - Go Canada Go!

Well, I'll sign off for now. Will try to post some pictures soon.

Keep quilting, and, may your bobbins always be full!
Isn't she just the cutest little thing????

I played with her for a little while and she runs like a charm. I really am a Pfaff fan (love the fact
that I don't have to wrestle with a walking foot) so it wasn't easy to resist. We are doing a block of

the month at our Guild right now so this will come in very handy.

When my DH asked "how many machines do you need?" all I could say was just one more.

Have to show you the pillow I'm working on now. Each of my twisted sisters are making one too. It's a pattern from The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. They have some really cute designs and their booth at the Festival was wonderful!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Hello everyone:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I have some new rulers to tell you about. They are more than wonderful! These rulers are becoming more popular every day. I keep trying new ones and I haven't found one I didn't like yet. Here are some pictures of the ones I've tried so far but I know I'll soon have then all. If you think you'd like one, you can purchase by just e-mailing me and I'll give you the details and send it out to you.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Here's the first one I tried - the half square triangle. I was so pleased with the outcome of these blocks. This ruler is available in 1.5", 2.5", 3.5", 4.5", 5.5", 6.5" 8.5", 9.5" and 12.5" square sizes. They are also offered in sets, which are more economical.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This first picture shows the ruler which is used to square up the oversized block.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The next picture shows how the ruler is placed on the block and the groove locks on to the seam, ready for trimming. Then you see the perfect half square triangle block all trimmed up - easy peasy!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I was so pleased with the way these blocks turned out using the half square triangle - and fast too!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">When I was so pleased with the half square triangles, just had to try the flying geese. I've always hated making the geese when you use different colours on each side. Using these rulers makes this process a breeze. Here are some pictures.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The first shows the ruler I used to square up the flying geese and the second picture is my block finished. I'd now like to make a quilt with more flying geese blocks. They certainly don't intimidate me any more.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Didn't they turn out great! There are so many sizes, even the tiny sizes that are used in the Jo Morton patterns.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Well, I couldn't stop with those two rulers, had to order the Triangle In A Square System. I have a pattern I'd like to make that this ruler will be perfect for. In the first picture you'll see there are 3 pieces. You get the two over sized templates to cut your fabric, along with the double grooved trimming ruler to lock onto both seams. Think of all the blocks and sashings you can make with this ruler.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This second picture shows the block before trimming with the ruler ready to go, along with the completed block - perfect.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I think I'll try the Half Rectangle Triangle Square Up Ruler next - looks very interesting.
They end up 12" x 16".

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The patterns come from The Quilt Company in Pennsylvania and are available at many quilt shops. They make some very nice patterns and I especially like these.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I didn't follow the pattern completely and the reason is that I wanted to save the step of quilting it.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">First of all I cut a piece of cotton that will be used for background just a smidge larger than the pattern calls for because sometimes the quilting will make your project a little smaller. Using my frixion pen, I traced the greenery pattern onto it.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Second, I cut a piece of very thin cotton (something you wondered why you bought it and is not good enough to put into a quilt). I cut it about 14" x 18". On top of that I put a piece of thin batting about the same size. Then I centered the background piece on top.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">These 3 pieces can be sprayed with 505 or something of that nature to keep the sandwich together, or, you can baste around the area to be embroidered.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I used Sulky 12 wt. thread and starting at one end, I stitched to the first branch, then up that branch and back down right on top of my first row of stitching. Then I went along the main branch to the next branch. If there were branches coming off, I would go up the little branch, back to where I veered off, then to the end of the branch and back to the main branch, always sewing right on top of the previous stitching. If I went off, I didn't worry - it's a tree branch and they can go any which way. When I got to the end of the main branch, I turned around and did a second row of stitching along that main branch. If I made an error, I just left a tail of thread I could weave in and started again. When I was all finished, I pulled the thread ends to the back and tied them off.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">After the branch was sewn, I drew a line around it, the size the fabric was supposed to be in the first place. Remember, I cut this piece larger in case sewing the branches made this piece smaller.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Borders are cut to a specific size as per the pattern. First the small red border. I used the line I drew to simulate the edge of the background fabric.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Next comes the outer border, which is dark green on this one.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">There are a couple of ways to finish the pillow but I just followed the instructions to have one piece fold over the other. It worked just fine for me.

It was held at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state. There were several Guilds showing their quilts and numerous vendors with all their wonderful goodies (just try not to spend money) and it was delightful to roam the grounds in the sunshine. Sorry I don't have any pictures but if you google "Quilting in Chautauqua" you will get an idea of what I'm talking about. Good quilts, good vendors, good accommodation, good food, good friends. I couldn't ask for anything better. What a week-end!!!Bolts and Bobbinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06189397615354924334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3878906696349456937.post-44169641288695077802013-09-15T19:26:00.001-07:002013-09-15T19:26:43.101-07:00Aren't Scrap Quilts Great..I love scrap quilts so when my Twisted Sisters wanted us to each make the same pattern to see what the differences would be, I was in!

First of all, rummage through those boxes of scraps.

Oh, I remember that fabric but didn't think I had any left at all, but it will work good in this quilt. I don't know how many times I said that, but, I was able to pull out all the fabric I needed. The only thing is, I still have piles of pieces! This quilt didn't make a dent.

Yes, today was really productive. My Twisted Sisters came to sew today and we worked on a few projects (and drank tea and laughed a lot). We meet each week and try to get some sewing done but, at times, it's difficult - just like to visit. Today though, we really did work. Here are a few pictures.

Here's one sister doing hand work. She loves
doing embroidery work by hand and makes some very beautiful quilts. Hope we get to see this one when it's all done.

Here's the project I was working on today. It's a cute baby panel with borders put on. I'll let you see it better when it's done. Just the outside borders to put on, then quilt it.

I'm sorry to say but, the picture of the mini twister wall hanging being finished by our other Sister didn't turn out and it is really cute! What patience to work on that little thing. Will post a picture asap.

Then it was time to make 15-1/2" blocks for naptimequilter.blogspot.com who is going to put the blocks together have them quilted and give the quilts to the victims of the Calgary floods. A great project - many hands make light work.
The two pictures show one finished and mine almost finished. (Think I will take out the top left block - it doesn't really fit in).
Go to naptimequilter.blogspot.com. This gal has requested blocks be sent to her and they will be put together and quilted for those who are in need. Go to her blog and look up her post "Just One Slab" of June 25th where she has instructions for a very easy block that uses up scraps. It looks so simple. I'm going to get into my scraps and get some blocks out to them. But, what a mess I have. I've spent the last few weeks just moving things around to try to make better use of the space. I think a garage sale is in order. If I get rid of some of the stuff I have, I will have room in case I see something I just have to have. Is there any logic here - I don`t think so.

I said I would show you some more of our African pictures so here is a picture of a Cactus Tree. There were so many different species of trees and this is one that I thought was interesting.
Being the long week-end, I know I should have been doing a lot of other things but, I couldn't help myself. Just had to get these little owls finished. I had started them before going to to our Granddaughter's graduation and couldn't wait to see them finished. They were a little fiddly, but, I love making little items like this so did enjoy doing them. I found the pattern in the Winter issue of Simple Quilts & Sewing. This is a great picture of the sunrise - taken from a hot air balloon. My DH got up about 3:00 am in the morning so he could go on this balloon ride. He was really impressed with the whole trip and would do it again in a minute.

I wasn't able to go on this trip - had been sick for a few days and, to be honest, was afraid to get up there and start feeling bad again - that wouldn't be a good scene.

Just like most quilters, I have a lot of UFO's and I've just been adding to the pile. What is it about borders that I have trouble finishing a quilt when I get to the borders??? Does anyone else have that problem? It's a biggie for me!! I seem to be able to get the blocks finished and sewn together then come to a standstill when I get to borders. One day I'm going to finish them!

Since my last blog, I've been to Africa on vacation. It was a real experience and an education too. I was glad to be home and am thankful I live where I do. I will be posting more about the trip soon.

Right now I'm working on a scrap quilt with our Twisted Sisters group. They tell me I'm cheating - I know, I'm supposed to just pick up the next two pieces and sew them together. I'm having trouble doing that so told them I was just ensuring I didn't have all the same colour in one block - they think I'm matching (I can't help myself). They think my quilt will turn out better than theirs but they are great quilters and I know theirs will be beautiful. Will post some pics soon so you can see what we're up to.

Well, must go now. Have some tidying up to do. Don't quilters always have tidying up to do?

Will chat again soon. Happy quilting!!!
Before we headed into summer, I decided to put some Batiks on special. These are just a few of them. They ranged from $5.00/mt. to $7.50/mt. and a lot of people took advantage of the sale. Before putting them on sale though, thought I'd like to make a little sample of something for interest. Quite a few of the girls in our Strip Club have made a copy of mine and they're really nice. Here is mine.

Well, no, but there's been lots going on. I haven't done a big pile of sewing - had to get my eye fixed first. Found I wasn't seeing what I thought I was.

Getting my eye fixed was something else! I had to sit and sleep with my face down for a week. It was a bit hard but worth every minute - my sight has come back beautifully. I am very pleased.

Will be back later, doing the washing today and must get to the clothes line.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">It has taken a while, but I've finally gotten the District 7010 Rotary Quilt finished. All the Clubs in the district sent in a block depicting their town or their Club projects. It is very interesting. So many different techniques were used and you can see some people are very creative. It has been finished since early April but it had to be unveiled to the Rotary District before I could show it off. Here it is, being held up by the boys next door (the quilt is 86" high and they're a lot taller than I am).Bolts and Bobbinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06189397615354924334noreply@blogger.com0
